Katy sits west of Houston along I-10, which puts most Katy addresses roughly thirty miles from George Bush Intercontinental. On a clear Sunday morning that is a straightforward run. On a Tuesday at seven it is a completely different drive, and the gap between those two versions is not fifteen minutes. It is closer to half an hour.
That is why people in Katy book a car rather than drive themselves, and it usually has nothing to do with luxury. A missed flight costs more than the ride, and the Katy Freeway is where Houston morning traffic is least forgiving.
How long the drive from Katy actually takes, in rush hour. Most car services quote you the empty-road number. These are our own running times in traffic, roughly 7 to 10 in the morning and 4 to 7 in the afternoon, because that is when most people need to travel and it is the number that decides whether you make your flight.
Katy to George Bush Intercontinental (IAH): 80 to 90 minutes
Katy to William P. Hobby (HOU): 70 to 80 minutes
Katy to Downtown Houston: 50 to 60 minutes
Katy to the Galleria and Uptown: 45 to 50 minutes
Katy to the Energy Corridor: 20 minutes
Outside those windows every one of these comes down substantially. The IAH run, for instance, is 50 to 60 minutes on a clear road. We set your pickup from your gate time and the day of the week rather than from an average.
Which Houston airport you should be flying from. Here is something most Katy travellers get wrong: from Katy the two airports are closer together than they look on a map. Intercontinental is northeast and Hobby is southeast, so Hobby seems obviously further. But the Katy Freeway into that northeast run is exactly where the worst of the morning traffic sits, and in rush hour our Hobby run from Katy is usually the shorter of the two.
Which means that from Katy, drive time should not decide your airport. Pick on the airline, the fare and the schedule, and treat the drive as roughly equivalent. That is not true from most of Houston, and it is worth knowing before you book a more expensive fare out of IAH on the assumption that it saves you an hour on the road.

Why Katy travellers leave the car at home. Driving yourself to IAH from Katy means making that run twice, paying to store your car in between, and then doing the return leg at the end of a long flight when you are least equipped for it. For a couple travelling together it also means one of you is driving rather than working, resting, or talking to the other.
